This highly-acclaimed production won awards for best director, best design and best actor. This composite excerpt starts with a blend of the echoing corridors in the basement of the hospital with a low slowly-evolving texture which was used pre-show as the audience encountered the set.  At 0'20” is the reverberant piano of the first cue leading us outside before we head to Liverpool Street station on a journey to the continent; at 1'17” we hear a mazurka played by the actor Kevin Lennon on his on-stage piano, becoming a duet as he his joined by one of his lady visitors; at 2'34” this shifts and segues into one of his nightmares, a montage of whispers, overheard fragments and transformed sounds, before a cadence marking the end of the first act.
